Win Your Way to The Borgata Poker Open Championship

So you're looking to play in the Borgata Open Championship Sept. 15-20, but that $3,300 + $200 buy-in has you a little worried.

Well, no worries mate.

Borgata has a full slate of satellites at the Borgata Poker Open to help you earn your way into a seat at the championship tables. In all, six satellites are scheduled starting Friday Sept. 13.

That first satellite, starting 3pm Friday, Sept. 13, is also the most - how shall we say this - cost effective. The $175 + $25 No Limit Hold'em tournament will send one in twenty players to the championship. In other words, if 100 players are in, the top five finishers win seats.

The odds of winning a seat go up as the buy-ins go up.

Another five satellites begin Saturday Sept. 14 and Sunday Sept. 15. The championship is a double Play tournament with two starting days, so satellite winners on Sept. 15 start the championship Sept. 16.

Here are the scheduled qualifiers for Sept. 14 and 15:

Event 45:  Sat 9/14 4pm $ 350 + $ 50 Championship Qualifier No Limit Hold'em (~ 1 in 10)
Event 46:  Sat 9/14 7pm $ 700 + $ 50 Championship Qualifier No Limit Hold'em (~ 1 in 5)
Event 47:  Sun 9/15 12pm $ 350 + $ 50 Championship Qualifier No Limit Hold'em (~ 1 in 10)
Event 48:  Sun 9/15 4pm $ 700 + $ 50 Championship Qualifier No Limit Hold'em (~ 1 in 5)
Event 49:  Sun 9/15 8pm $ 500 + $ 50 Championship Qualifier No Limit Hold'em (~ 1 in 7)

And don't forget, a free seat to the championship is also up for grabs through Borgata's online drawing. Enter here.

Here's the Borgata Poker Open's full schedule.

See you at the championship.

Online registration for Borgata Poker Open events is now closed with on-site registration starting up at noon Monday, Sept. 2 - otherwise known as Labor Day.

On-site reservation for all events begins from noon -midnight Monday; reopening from 8am-midnight daily through Sept. 20.

The Borgata Poker Open starts with a $2 Million Guaranteed, $500 + $60 No Limit Hold'em tournament starting Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 11am. Day 1B is Wednesday Sept. 4 at 11am.

Early registration for the opening event, traditionally the biggest field of the open, is always advised.

Here's the Borgata Poker Open full schedule.

Meanwhile, as is it often is, the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot is at a healthy level heading into the busy times of the Borgata Open. Right now it sits at $392,000 going into this weekend's play. The Small Bad Beat Jackpot is at $50K.

While just a nice piece of serendipity (love that word), the crowds that turn out for the Borgata Poker Open have a way of pumping up the jackpot, so we could see some big numbers soon.

So far in 2013, the Borgata Bad Beat Jackpot has paid out just over $2 Million.

Now for some weekend update stuff.

Both August Bonus Comp Dollars and Borgata'sTournament Leaderboard promotion end Saturday Aug. 31. Still, there's a little  time left to earn some hours and points.

The Borgata Poker Room has also announced some October events.

October's Saturday Series event will be held Oct. 5. The tournament is a $350 + $50 buy-in.

The $150 + $30 Borgata Mini-series returns Oct. 6-10.

Summer is ending folks, but the poker action at Borgata is just beginning.

High Heels Poker Tour Stops At Borgata Poker Open

Women at the poker table - it's been a controversial subject among poker players since the game was invented.

Wild Bill Hickock, for example, was reportedly against it, but look what happened to him.

The modern controversy, however, is even worse because of a simple fact. Some of these female players have gotten really good.

Losing to anybody hurts.

And thanks to an organization like the High Heels Poker Tour, which sponsors "Ladies Only" tournaments around the country, there's just more and more female players entering the poker world.

So when that tour hooks up with the premiere poker room on the East Coast - namely the Borgata Poker Room  - you can expect that trend to get even bigger.

Thus, Event 10 at the Borgata Poker Open - $350 + $50 Deep Stack Ladies No Limit Hold'em tournament - is now a stop on the High Heels Poker Tour.

"We've been talking with Borgata for about five years," says Lauren Failla, president of the tour. "Borgata is a giant poker presence in the country - their reputation stands for itself - and they've always been very supportive of women's events. It seemed like a good match."

Still, Failla acknowledges that one of the goals of the tour is to get more female players comfortable at regular events (such as the 54 other tournaments at the open).

"There are basically three types of women who come to play ladies events," Failla says. "There are women who are looking to play in a less adversarial setting than they see at tables playing with men. The second are beginners, and the third are players that are in the regular main events all the time, but they want to enjoy the camaraderie of a ladies only event."

"I've been playing for more than 20 years," Failla says. "I used to be the only girl at the table. Now the amount of known and winning female players goes up every year."

To create more players like that, the tour, through it's High Heels Poker Tour Academy, has scheduled an instructional seminar for women players at Borgata for Jan. 18-19. The academy will feature instruction from two Borgata regulars - Jamie Kerstetter and Marguerite Spagnudio - and a special appearance by Will "The Thrill" Failla (no relation to Lauren that they know of).

In the meantime, the Borgata Poker Open's Ladies Only event, like the Borgata Poker Open Championship which is a WPT event, is now part of national tour.

"Remember, we're not trying to pigeon hole women into ladies only events," says Failla. "We think this is the perfect segue into becoming a force at any poker table."

It was a pretty ambitious goal when Borgata set a $2 Million prize pool guarantee for the opening event of the 2013 Borgata Poker Open, a $500 buy-in event.

Borgata Event Center
But with 1,670 players turning out Tuesday for Day 1A (184 remain) and today’s Day 1B session now officially sold out, making the guarantee is in the bag.

While a final player count for today won’t be available until late today (Sept. 4), Borgata’s live tournament blog reports that the Borgata Event Center (90 tables) and The Signature Room (26 tables) are full to capacity. And a large amount of tables in the Borgata Poker Room are handling Event 1 play.

Lines of players holding alternate tickets and waiting for a table are out the door and the event is officially sold out.

All this should set a new record for a Borgata poker event.

Like we said – a $2 million guaranteed prize pool? Piece of cake.

If you've been shut out of Day 1B, there is another tournament on today’s schedule:

We've crowned the first two champions of the 2013 Borgata Poker Open even as play continues in Event 1, a record-setting event that drew 4,482 entries.

Eighteen players remained in Event 1, which got underway at noon, playing down towards a massive $363,091 first place cash. That's pretty impressive for a $500 buy-in event.

You can follow all the action on Borgata's live tournament blog as they play down to a winner.

Now, back to the trophies.

Event 2 winner
Porbandarwala
The first main event to finish up early today (Sept. 6) was actually Event 3, a $400 buy-in Pot Limit Omaha H/L 8B tournament. The winner was Joe Palma of Bensalem Pa., who took home $17,110 after a 17.5 hour all-night tournament. So that's like $1,000 an hour, not bad. It's also  notable that third place finisher Ryan Waddell won the event at last year's Borgata Poker Open.

Full recap

The next trophy was handed out a little while later to Event 2 winner Soheb Porbandarwala of Stamford Conn. His win netted him $56,170 for the $350 buy-in, $100 bounty tournament. You can add $700 in bounties to his total.

This event attracted a healthy 689 entries, so attendance for the Borgata Poker Open is off to an amazing start.

Borgata Poker Open Spotlight: James Governa

$
0
0
One of the most popular promotions in any Borgata Poker Open is the tournament leaderboard, which can transform a series of 50-plus single tournaments into one massive two-week run on the tables for some players.

Such was the case for James Governa, a retired police officer from Richboro Pa. who will be playing the 2013 Borgata Poker Open championship (Sept. 15-20) precisely because he had a great run in the Borgata Spring Poker Open this April.

James Governa
2013 Borgata Spring Open
With a first place win in Event 12 of the Spring Open, which came right after a second place finish in Event 11 of the open, along with his other showing, Governa knocked down the leaderboard win.

His win netted him his seat in the championship.

“I've been given a special opportunity here and I really hope I don’t waste it,” Governa tells the Borgata poker blog. “Normally I wouldn't play in the championship event, so it’s exciting. But I haven’t been on the kind of run I was on in the spring so far in this open. But I’m hoping I can take advantage of this.”

The leaderboard format awards points for finishes in Borgata Poker Open events as well as tournament buy-ins and total tournaments entered. (Here’s the current standings for the 2013 Borgata Poker Open)

For players, the leaderboard is one of the most watched aspects of tournament play.

“It’s a great part of playing at Borgata,” Governa says. “It gives you something to shoot for even beyond the individual tournaments. The thing that gave me the win in the Spring Open was that I had two final tables in a row. And I almost had two firsts. I had a second and a first place finish back to back. That was by far the best run I've ever had.”

For Governa, who prefers to play in large poker events like the Borgata Poker Open, it fits perfectly with his style.

“I usually only play in the big events,” he says. “I’m a casual player and you won’t see me playing too many daily tournaments or things. I like these big opens where there’s a series of events I can pick and choose. For where I live, it wouldn't make much sense to just come in for a day.

“I do pretty well for the type of player I am,” says Governa. “I’m not a pro, I worked for a living until recently and I've been playing since about 2009.”

And playing very well. Governa’s record for tournament wins tops $170,000, including about $47,000 at the 2013 Borgata Spring Poker Open. He also has a 40th place finish in Event 11 of the 2013 Borgata Poker Open.

That kind of success makes Governa want to take that long drive to the Borgata Poker Room.

Borgata just runs a very professional operation,” he says. “And the floor people and the supervisors are all very knowledgeable, which is important when you need a ruling on something. And they’re good people that really take care of the players. It’s just a pleasure to play here.”

Hey. it’s Borgata’s pleasure to have you here, Jim.

WPT Championship Moving to Borgata

$

As final table action gets underway for the Borgata PokerOpen Championship, a World Poker Tour stop, one thing is pretty obvious at this point – Borgata and the WPT make great partners.

Borgata has hosted four of the five biggest events in WPT history and this year’s championship event drew 1,189 entrants and a total buy-in of $3.9 million.

So there’s only one thing to do – bring the WPT world championship to Borgata in April.

Borgata and the WPT announce that the World Poker Tour’s prestigious, season-ending, $25,000 buy-in World Championship will be held at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City.

So with the Borgata Poker Open Championship (to be televised in March) and January 2014’s WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship, Borgata will be home to three televised WPT tournaments in Season XII.

“We’re very pleased to name Borgata the host of the Season XII WPT World Championship,” said WPT President Adam Pliska. “With Borgata’swell-deserved reputation for running world-class tournaments and providing unparalleled service to its players, we believe this venue is perfectly suited to host our season-culminating event. We look forward to working with the team at Borgata to bring the WPT World Championship to new heights.”

Along with the change of venue, World Poker Tour is pleased to welcome PartyPoker as the official sponsor of the Season XII WPT World Championship. “The partnership of WPT, PartyPoker, and Borgata brings together three of the most respected names in poker, and we look forward to making the World Championship more impressive than ever before.” Pliska said.

“We are extremely pleased to be growing our long-standing relationship with World Poker Tour and to be expanding our relationship with PartyPoker, especially as we look to launch Borgatapoker.com,” said Borgata’s Senior Vice President of Operations, Joe Lupo. “Adding the WPT World Championship Sponsored by PartyPoker is a welcome addition and an important new chapter in the history of this illustrious tournament.”

Sorry Vegas, Borgata Atlantic City is the WPT’s home now.

Zinno Tops Selbst for Borgata Open Championship

It was a big win for Anthony Zinno of Cranston R.I. as he took home nearly double his previous tournament winnings with an $825,000 cash at the 2013 Borgata Poker Open Championship.

Anthony Zinno
Ok, a really big win.

Zinno found himself heads-up with pro Vanessa Selbst, but Zinno’s ace held up against a Selbst's king on the last hand and he took the championship. Selbst wins close to $500,000 and just missed another shot to be the first women to win a WPT title.

“Unfortunately cards just don't go your way sometimes," Selbst, who now has nearly $8 million in career tournament earnings, told the Borgata poker blog. "I ran good to get to heads up. I was all in with the worst hand and got lucky to survive. I don't really have regrets."

Meanwhile, the 2013 Borgata Poker Open, a record-setter for Borgata is in the books and regular tournament play resumes.

The Borgata BadBeat Jackpot has survived the Open crowds un-hit and stands at an impressive $553,749. That’s a better than $220,000 payoff for a full jackpot winner.

Daily cash games are also underway.

Poker, you see, never stops in the Borgata Poker Room.

The 2013 Borgata Poker Open is in the books and we can now offer full congratulations to all of this year’s event winners.

The Open began with a record setting field for a Borgatapoker event (and East Coast poker event for that matter) when 4,482 entries were made into the opening $500 buy-in event. Again there were reports that some players were shut out on the second opening day (You should always book your seat early, just saying) and the event set a trend for large fields throughout the open's 25 main events and secondary evening events.

Event 1 was taken by Maksim Rozenfield of Staten Island who received a cash of $363,091 out of a prize pool of better than $2.2 million. Prior to this win, Rozenfield had about $35,000 in previous recorded tournament cashes.

So dreams started coming true at the Borgata Poker Open right from the start.

Of course the biggest dream went to Anthony Zinno, who won the 2013 Borgata Poker Open Championship, outlasting pro Vanessa Slebst heads-up at the end. Zinno passed up being a lawyer for poker and was rewarded with a $825,000 cash and a World Poker Tour title.

That’s dreaming big.

As always, the Borgata Poker Room was star studded with poker pros, and even actor James Wood, a Borgata regular who took a second place in Event 20. But as always happens at Borgata, amateurs and up-and-coming pros had their turns in the spotlight as well.

Here’s a look at some other highlights of the 2013 Borgata Poker Open.

Event 2: With such a large amount of players on-hand for the opening event, the second event of the Borgata Poker Open drew and impressive 689 entries and a total buy-in of $241,500. The winner was Soheb Porbandarwala of Stamford Ct. who wins $56,170 and grabbed seven $100 bounties in the $350 buy-in event.

Event 6: One of the highest buy-ins of the open at $1,000, this event was notable for its winner – Willo “the Thrill” Failla. A staple at Borgata Opens, this was his fifth trophy win at a Borgata event, easily a record. He pocketed another $46K for the win.

Event 8: This was the second event at the Open to top 1,000 entries as thee $350 buy-in tournament brought out 1,956 and a total buy-in of $528,000. The winner was Johnson Nguyen of Philly who takes home $111K.

Event 13: There’s something about the $260 + $40 buy-ins at Borgata Poker Opens that brings out the crowds. This event drew 953 and total buy-in of just under $248,000. Perry Kaplan of North Beach NJ wins with $54,000 and Lauren Kepple had one of the best finishes for a female player taking home just under $32,000.

Event 16: It wasn't so much the big field, only 64 players, but just the nature of this event that makes it stand out. This was a $1,500 buy-in, $500 bounty Heads-up affair. Four former Borgata Heads Up champions were in the field, but none of them cashed. Instead Kevin Saul of Chicago took the title and about $37,000, not to mention a $500 bounty for every round.

Event 23: With the Borgata Poker Room packed for the championship event, this tournament drew a big field of 937 for the $$200 buy-in event. The winner, Carless Boatwright grabbed an about $41,000 cash.
